Samenvatting

At present, CCD cameras are installed at fixed intervals in expressway tunnels in Japan for the purpose of monitoring traffic, and they are effective in discovering traffic accidents quickly by detecting abnormal traffic conditions from their images. The purpose of this research is to automatically detect car fires, and determine the position of the fire, from CCD camera images as a function in addition to the detection of abnormal traffic conditions. To this end, simulated fires were staged in actual vehicles and in actual tunnels by gasoline fire saucer fires, and a study was conducted concerning methods for detecting automobile fires by means of CCD camera images. It was confirmed that one effective means for detecting a fire in a tunnel is to run a frequency analysis on the time-series variation in brightness of a CCD camera image and make use of the power spectrum of the phenomenon of the change in the form of a flame as it burns (its fluctuation frequency).
