This paper describes the structure of the first Hungarian National Traffic Safety Programme and the experience gained in the first year of its implementation. This programme was adopted by the Hungarian Government on 9 September 1993. The programme takes the safety situation of the different transport branches into consideration. The main objective of the integrated programme is to reduce the number of fatally or seriously injured persons involved in road accidents by 25-30% by the year 2000. This objective is compared with the 1992 data. The programme focuses on the positive influence to be exerted on the human factor both in the short and in the long run. The programme also includes suggestions for taking both infrastructural and technical measures. Research and development activities are also an important part of the programme. The accident preventive measures taken in the year 1993 proved to be efficient, in spite of the fact that the programme could not be implemented completely. Following the programme approval, measures were taken: (1) to ensure the financing of implementation; and (2) to establish the required organization for the coordination of different activities.
