The first lessons gathered from the implementation of the Intelligent Traffic Control system (CIT) in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil are described. The paper covers mainly institutional, administrative and managerial lessons, since the processes of conceptualising, negotiating funds, biding, commissioning and implementing the project. It took quite a long period of approximately twelve years since its beginning. It is a reflection on what was done right, what should be done differently, and how one could be more effective in similar ITS projects. It covers a short presentation of Belo Horizonte urban transport system, a brief retrospective of the traffic control tools used in the past, a description of the CIT system, the lessons learned and recommendations for similar projects that can be helpful to other agencies in deploying ITS systems, mainly traffic control systemsin developing countries.
