Area- wide traffic restriction has become a substantial part of city development planning in Berlin in the last few years. While some badly planned examples have given rise to justifiable criticism, overall positive effects have been observed in experiences up to now. In areas assigned traffic sign No. 325 (Road Traffic Regulations - StVO) these effects are clearly more favourable than in areas with a 30 km /h speed limit. A grading of suitable concepts is thus needed, and environmental improvements together with traffic sing No. 325 are recommended as a priority in problem areas of urban planning.
