Space saving in traffic has only been the object of research since the mid 80's. Its aims are (1) to take less land and (2) to stress spaces less intensively. The intensity of surface space stressing is assessed in the following terms: (1) surface space affected (immission areas), (2) surface space taken (mostly plots of land), (3) paved traffic areas, (4) sealed surfaces and (5) surface space monopolised by the vehicle traffic system (divided carriageways and car parks). Methods from Switzerland are used as an example.
