Samenvatting

The development of La Trobe University's new Vehicle and Driver Safety Procedure was prompted by concerns about driver fatigue, particularly among staff required to drive long distances between different university campuses or on extended field trips. Such concerns were raised via a Zone Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Committee, leading to the formation in 2001 of a working party to review driver fatigue and to develop a standard Procedure that would be included in the University Occupational Health and Safety Manual. Rather than focusing just on fatigue, the need for a broad approach was agreed and information was collected from a wide variety of sources. The Procedure was developed through an iterative process of drafting and circulation for general comment, prior to its final adoption by the Executive OHS Committee.
