As an environmentally benificial alternative to local transport, the bicycle can play an important role in urban transport systems. Certain measures can be taken to promote the use of the bicycle and thus raise the percentage level of bicycles in traffic. The results of the "bicycle- friendly city" model study, show that environmental, town planning and traffic policies should not limit their bicycle promotion activities to the building of cycle paths. Instead, of much larger package of measures should be developed to encourage bicycles in daily transport.
