Samenvatting
The development of breakaway joints to reduce the severity of collisions with metal lighting columns has given rise to a need for lightweight column shafts of slender appearance. In this note formulae are derived to facilitate the design of tapered columns of circular cross-section. These formulae are suitable also for the design of columns with an octagonal cross-section.
