Four-way stop signs (FWSS) are stop signs installed on each leg of a cross intersection. The traffic is required to stop and give way to any traffic within the intersection before proceeding. This study investigated the effectiveness of the FWSS in reducing accidents in cross intersections. Recorded accidents before and after the installations were compared. The FWSS also function as a traffic calming device in reducing speeding problems. The option of using FWSS as a speed control device in areas of high speed such as shortcuts through residential areas as an alternative to adjacent main road system was explored. Results of the study revealed that FWSS have a dramatic effect in reducing accidents in cross intersections. About 90 percent of traffic was observed to stop or roll when approaching the intersection. Council is continually receiving requests for the installation of additional FWSS to alleviate traffic problems. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of FWSS as a tool for reducing traffic accidents and speeding in the City of Newcastle. The results of this study give insights and awareness to other traffic practitioners of a special device which has until now not been recognised as a traffic calming device but which appears to be an effective, low cost treatment.
