This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in France. Transport determinants are considered including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) public transport, b) roads and c) car ownership and use. Urban, regional and interregional travel patterns are considered. Figures are provided describing modal split according to a) age, b) sex, c) occupation, d) residence, e) car ownership, f) license, g) commuting distance and h) purpose. France's policy making structure is described and its main problems, options and policies outlined.
