This was one of the 1998 TAC Environment Achievement Award Nominations (2). The Fredericton-Moncton Highway Project is a 195 km 4-lane toll highway being built through a public-private partnership in New Brunswick. The Maritime Road Development Corporation is responsible for the design and construction of the project, as well as for operating and maintaining it for 30 years. The Environmental Management System (EMS) being applied to this project is unique for a highway project. It is ISO 14000 compatible and addresses all aspects of the project from design, through construction to operations, maintenance and rehabilitation. The New Brunswick Department of Transportation is acknowledged here for its forward thinking in working with the provincial and federal agencies to set out the requirements for an EMS for this project in the Request for Proposals. McCormick Rankin Corporation, and Marshall Macklin Monaghan Limited are the two lead engineering firms on the project. These two firms were responsible for designing the details for the EMS, and for managing its implementation. The project already has provided examples of environmental programs and innovations that are being used elsewhere in the transportation sector. (A)
