The paper describes the study carried out and presents the results. It has been shown that pavement width, rise, fall, curvature and roughness affect significantly the free speeds. Environmental factors such as light conditions (day/ night) and weather (dry surface/ wet surface/ raining condition) and shoulder type have also been proved to affect free speeds. The results will be of use in the selection of design speeds for geometrical design of roads, development of speed-flow relations, determination of PCU factors and selection of speeds for traffic regulation.
