Samenvatting

The Freeway Incident Response Services Tracking (FIRST) project has a primary goal to clear the roadways faster after a major incident in Los Angeles County. The FIRST system, an Advanced Traveler Information System/Advanced Traffic Management System (ATIS/ATMS), is designed and implemented to provide data on freeway incidents in Los Angeles County to allied agencies, first responders, and the media in support of the FIRST project goals and objectives. The system aids in incident management by facilitating two-way communication between the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the responders that are involved in clearing the roadway, and advances the state-of-the-art in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) by using open systems, standards-based designs, and best-of-breed commercial off-the-shelf hardware and software. The system is designed for extensibility and flexibility so that it can be easily adapted to new ATIS/ATMS objectives and technologies. (A*)
