A BASIC 12-HOUR COUNT CARRIED OUT ON THE SOUTH EASTERN FREEWAY (MELBOURNE) UTILISING UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING STUDENTS IS DESCRIBED. THE VOLUME-TIME AND SPEED-FLOW RELATIONSHIPS CONFIRM THE TRADITIONAL ACCEPTED RELATIONSHIPS OF BEARD AND MCLEAN (1974). HOWEVER, SOME INTERESTING DIFFERENCES RELATING TO PEAK AND OFF-PEAK DRIVER POPULATIONS ARE DEMONSTRATED.
