This report provides an introduction to the discussion of the working group G4 on freight transport. Logistics organisation is considered in relation to increasing globalisation of the economy and the opportunities for achieving increased efficiency, the need for improved freight logistics in cities, and the resistance to the construction of city logistics centres. Intermodal transport is considered in relation to the requirement for co-operation and the organisation of interchange points. Weight and dimensions in transportation are discussed in relation to the costs of overloading and the need for standardisation. Technical and social aspects of road transport are discussed in relation to deregulation, resultant severe price competition and the risk of deteriorating safety. New freight transport systems using advanced technologies such as information technology, automated highway systems, deep subterranean tunnel digging technology and new dedicated freight transport systems are outlined.
