The fuel savings resulting from optimising traffic signal control in Hamburg are presented in this paper. Systematic improvements to traffic signal coordination were carried out between 1982 and 1986 using TRANSYT. Fuel consumption and traffic flows were measured before and after the changes had been made within a selected test field area. Analysis of the results showed that fuel savings on the routes tested were approximately 3400 litres per working day, which is equivalent to approximately 850000 litres per year.
