Samenvatting

The future Integrated Road Transport Environment (IRTE) is supposed to support a number of RTI (Road Transport Informatics) systems and services emerging from various DRIVE and related projects (e.g. PROMETHEUS). Considering the European scale of the IRTE implementation a maximum degree of standardisation of equipment supporting those RTI applications should be achieved. This paper outlines some aspects of common functional specifications for the envisaged RTI applications using vehicle control at intersections and route guidance as examples. In general this is a top-down approach to derive applications from the overall goals. The applications are defined by building blocks following the methodology of Formal Description Techniques. Some examples are given to clarify the approach. Then an overview is given over the application areas of DRIVE projects. Finally there are some aspects dealt with how the impacts of applications can be assessed.
