Samenvatting

In this paper, the authors describe a comprehensive functional categorisation of intelligent vehicles. This categorisation can be used for further technical feasibility analyses and implementation strategy development. Three major developments or evolution axes are distinguished and a list of theoretically possible driver support systems were derived. Based on this framework, the so-called singular functionality Intelligent Modules (IM) which can be placed within vehicles are determined. The IM's can support certain driving tasks and possibly increase driver comfort, traffic safety and efficiency. A description of the modules is given, together with system applications and a first rough assessment of traffic flow impacts. It is found that a rather restricted number of systems are promising with regard to traffic flow safety and efficiency. The categorisation identified some yet unexplored systems which could be attractive for further development. (A)
