Samenvatting

Tunnels and underpasses are likely to play a greater part in our future road network. Daytime lighting for tunnel entrances represents a considerable proportion of their total running costs and it is important that the right solution should be found. Guidance is given in CIE Publication No. 26 (TC-4. 6) 1973 but there are areas where some difference of opinion remains. The re-statement of their points of view by Schreuder and Narisada in the opening papers may well have clarified the conditions under which the less expensive Japanese luminance levels for the entrance zone are adequate. Other problem areas are indicated by the author Schreuder who makes suggestions for international cooperation in their solution. The reviews of practice and experience in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Japan, where there are many more tunnels than in Britain, can only help in the further development of British practice.
