Samenvatting

This chapter considers mobility in the future from the point of view of the motor industry. Four areas are briefly discussed. In the field of urban development a choice is identified between planned urban living and urban sprawl. The planning process is seen as a means of generating options and scenarios. It is suggested that once unnecessary traffic has been removed, intelligent vehicle highway systems can be used to manage the remaining traffic. Examples of projects from the PROMETHEUS programme are listed. The fourth area considered important is reducing the negative impacts of transport (pollution, noise, energy consumption) by the use of advanced technologies. The author considers that research work needs interdisciplinary cooperation.
