Samenvatting

The author considers the role of technology in road safety, focussing in particular on information technology. Objectives are considered and the way in which these can be achieved discussed. Systems are briefly considered for surveillance, advice, education, reinforcement, external control and assistance for vulnerable road users. One system suggested undermines the status of speeding drivers by the withdrawal of privileges. A list of measures in use or under consideration is provided and practical constraints on their use examined. These include: a) economic factors; b) behavioural factors; c) social and policital factors; and d) legal factors. A number of topics are put forward for discussion.
