Samenvatting

The purpose of this conference was to consider the future of the commercial vehicle industry and to identify research requirements in preparation for the proposed future. The following themes were addressed: problem assessment; human performance and behavior; enforcement, compliance, and security management; driver health and wellness; workforce composition, skills, and training; vehicle design and technology; roadway design and operations; and liability and acceptance of new technology. These proceedings summarize the issues, comments, future scenarios, and other information addressed during the conference, organized according to the themes. The authored research papers presented at the conference are also included. Each chapter includes future scenarios as described by the speakers. In some cases, the speakers believed it necessary to begin with a reality check and described current conditions as a prologue to their visions of the future. The chapters also contain a synopsis of the discussions and presentations and the research needs cited, along with the appropriate research papers. The conference committee synthesized the information presented and discussions held, and their findings and recommendations are presented at the start of these proceedings. (Author/publisher)
