Two different fuzzy control strategies for signal control in oversaturated urban traffic networks are presented in this paper. The strategies make use of the progress of modern communication and measurement technologies which will provide better information about the current traffic state like current queue lengths and origin-destination flows. The control schemes take these data as input values for a rule based fuzzy logic system which determines the green periods for signal control. The first strategy is a completely decentralized algorithm which calculates traffic signal settings for an intersection reflecting only the current traffic state at this intersection. On the other hand the second strategy takes into account additional traffic information from neighbouring intersections. The strategies are analysed and compared with respect to their efficiency using a microscopic urban traffic model in typical oversaturated scenarios. (A)
