Samenvatting

The gap remains, but not as wide. Driver's license and car possession has increased across all population groups, but the gap between ethnic minorities and the rest of the population remains. It is remarkable that the possession of a driver's license leads to the purchase of a car far more rapidly among ethnic minorities. Bicycle possession among ethnic minorities has indeed increased, but here too the difference persists. Bicycle use among the minorities is low compared with the rest of the population. The use of the bicycle amongst the young people lags even more noticeably behind. As far as car use is concerned ethnic minorities have caught up. The car use among minorities has greatly increased and is equal to that of other groups. In the modal split the car use share lies at 41 percent for both groups. Car possession and the concomitant car use has increased in particular in the 30 - 60 year old age group. Ethnic minorities have increased the number of displacements per day in relation to the other groups, but the displacement distance has not increased as strongly. Ethnic minorities seem more oriented on the direct surroundings than other population groups. A possible cause for the shifts in car and bicycle use may be that the ethnic minorities have, to a large extent, moved to the peripheral parts of the city, where parking permits are not required. The autochthonous population now lives more often in the old city, where it is inconvenient to have a car and the bicycle is, in general, faster. (Author/publisher)
