Samenvatting

The layout of roads in residential areas in Sweden, Denmark, Holland and England in examined. In Sweden, residential areas are served by collector roads and local roads on which speed limits of 50 and 30 kph respectively apply. Safe and convenient footpaths and cycle paths should be provided in each area; Denmark has two special kinds of roads in residential areas, ''quiet'' roads with speed limits of 30 kph, and play roads with limits of 15 kph. Both types of roads incorporate physical obstacles to keep speed down. Residential areas in Holland are designated. “woonerf” where vehicular traffic is subordinated to other traffic. Maximum speed is 10-15 kph. Roads are narrow and incorporate physical obstacles. A large section is devoted to residential roads in England.
