Samenvatting

This article reviews personal injury road accidents in 2000. Further details are shown in the main tables. Part 1 comprises nine tables which depict 2000 casualty numbers. These tables also include casualty numbers for 1999 and the average for the years 1981-1985 (the basis for the previous national target for reducing the number of road casualties by one third by the year 2000). For comparison, the resultant percentage changes are also shown in the tables and these are further depicted in charts 1a-1c. Table 1a shows all casualties and these are further disaggregated by sex in table 1b, by age group in table 1h and by road type in table 1i. Tables 1c-1g give results for different types of road user. Casualty rates per 100 million vehicle kilometres, or, in the case of pedestrian casualties, per 100 thousand population, are also shown. Part 2 gives information on the cost of accidents and motor insurance claims, which have been supplied by the Department's Road Safety Division and the Association of British Insurers (ABI). In 2000, the Government announced new targets for the reduction of road casualties relative to the average for 1994 - 98. Progress towards these new targets is reported on in article 2 in this volume.
