Samenvatting

This article gives a review of road injury accidents in 1991. Fuller details are given in the main tables. Part 1 comprises seven tables which depict 1991 casualty numbers. The tables also include numbers for 1990 and the averages for the years 1981-1985 (the basis for the national target for reducing the number of road casualties by one third by the year 2000). For comparison the resultant percentage changes are also shown. Table 1a shows the overall casualties and these are further disaggregated by age in Table 1f and by road type in Table 1g. Tables 1b-1f concentrate on data for certain types of road user. Casualty rates per 100 million vehicle kilometres, or, in the case of pedestrian casualties and casualties by age, per 100 thousand population, are also shown. The 1991 traffic figures, and therefore 1991 casualty rates, are provisional. Traffic data for 1990 has been subject to recent revision and are reflected in the comparative rates. Part 2 comprises tables of data on cost of road accidents, drinking and driving and motor insurance claims. These topics have been included in previous editions of this report, usually in the form of full length articles. Articles on these subjects do not appear in this year's report but the background data are included in this review. More comprehensive information on these topics is given in the 1989 edition of Road Accidents Great Britain (see IRRD 846337). This report does, however, contain an article detailing research on the costing of road accidents. A Highways Economic Note giving full details of road accident costs will, as usual, be published later in the year by the Department of Transport.
