Samenvatting
The first steps to introduce the Geographical Information System (GIS) in the Dutch VSN-group were made in 1991. The VSN-group covers thirteen regional public transport companies. The GIS, and in particular the standard ATLAS-GIS system is used for further development in traffic and transport planning. There are three databases: (1) Geographic Files with all information about the location of geographical objects; (2) Datapoint Files with the coordinates of all locations not in the Geographic Files; and (3) Attribute Files with the different characteristics of the geographical objects. Some applications of the system are described in more detail.
