This paper reviews four applications of GIS for transportation: 1) Development of the National Highway System in the United States, 2) California's Intermodal Management System, 3) Wisconsin DOT's pavement management system and 4) Columbia, MO. planning applications. In general the paper reviews basic cost and benefits. The conclusion drawn is that GIS is a powerful tool for transportation but it must be planned and constructed carefully. A long term decision must be made to invest in the technology and view information as a resource. If these decisions are made, information will be available when needed, in a form that is useable to address today's issues. (A)
