Samenvatting

Accidents in Switzerland. For effective and practical prevention work, activity strategies and safety measures must be adapted to the extent of accidents. In Switzerland, however, no data is available that fully covers the accidents that occur among the Swiss population. Either there are gaps in the accident areas surveyed, in demographic coverage or in the severity of the accidents recorded. In particular, accidents among insures not covered by the Accident Insurance Act are insufficiently registered in public statistics — with the exception of road accidents. Gaps in data were closed by two studies conducted by the bfu — Swiss Council for Accident Prevention in 1994 (children) and 1997 (seniors). To update these outdated databases, the bfu decided to carry out an empirical study on the total number of accidents. This report describes the study methodically and presents its main results.
