Contract FH-11-6550 was negotiated to measure the glare in the daytime that was produced or modified by the vehicle, to determine the current state of knowledge of glare as found in the literature, and to determine ways of measuring the amount of glare produced by a given vehicle. The research involved library, laboratory, and roadway phases. The library phase indicate a straight forward relationship between the illuminance from a glare source and its position, upon foveal vision. The laboratory study simulated the average driving scene both in intensity and distribution of glare sources such as veiling glare from windshield dirt, dash.panel windshield veiling glare, sky and hood glare and chromium spot glare.
