In this paper, Paul Vorster, the chief executive of the South African Society for Intelligent Transport Systems (SASITS), gives his views on the intelligent transport system (ITS) implications of hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The challenges include the large number of visitors and the geographical spread of the stadia. SASITS is promoting the role of integrated ticketing. Other potential ITS applications include automated traffic signal priority for public transport, real time passenger information at bus terminals and demand-responsive transport. Issues still to be resolved are congestion management, improving the image of public transport, and improvement of the minibus taxi industry under the Taxi Recapitalisation Plan. Progress with the 80 km Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, a public-private partnership initiative that will link Johannesburg and Pretoria and Johannesburg International Airport, is discussed. The importance of security is emphasised.
