Samenvatting

This document provides the UK Government's response to criticisms of the level of priority afforded to the policiing of roads comapred with other police priorities. The Governemnt recognises that roads policing is an important and valuable part of day-to-day policing in that it reduces vehicle and general crime. The effectiveness of roads policing will be measured within the Policing Performance Assessment. A specific roads policing strategy document will be issued and a road policing intelligence forum set up. An intelligence led approach to roads policing and its integration with other activities is considered desirable. Safety cameras are seen as an adjunct, not a replacement for roads policing. Automatic number plate recognition cameras are considered an especially valuable aid to reducing crime.
