This is a study of the growth of urban traffic and how to deal with it. It is argued that the basic problem is economic and that the methods for coping with it cannot be afforded. The author demonstrates that the urban transport problem is found in all large cities throughout the non-communist world. After establishing the root causes and tracing the development of the transport problem, the author devotes the main part of the book to an examination in depth of the way in which thirty cities in four continents (including london, lagos, new york, tokyo, calcutta, paris and melbourne) have dealt with the problem, and their plans for the future. Five consistent strategies for solving the problem are identified and examined in practical detail in the context of those cities which best illustrate them. An extensive bibliography is included.
