It is recognised that within current constraints of the London Bus Priority Network, only a certain amount of overall passenger benefits and modal shifts can be achieved. The Green Areas concept is to go beyond bus priority and look at the total journey quality. London Transport has been working with four West London Boroughs and consultants to develop bottom-up, easily implementable schemes that focus upon improvements for buses, cyclists and pedestrians. With public participation, the aim of rebalancing the network in favour of sustainable modes is key to this exercise. The project has been divided into two stages. The first stage involved the production of a report highlighting the elements required to meet the objectives of safe, sustainable and economically viable areas. In addition, a new objective-led evaluation framework was recommended. In the second stage, both qualitative and quantitative market research was undertaken to obtain public opinion in the given areas. This was incorporated into the design of new schemes to meet the objectives. An audit of the areas was undertaken with a view to provide solutions to the actual and perceived problems.
