Samenvatting

This book contains a collection of essays which support the policy of incorporating environmentally friendly modes of transport such as walking and cycling into city transport plans. The first section addresses the principles of environmentally friendly transport planning and outlines the environmental and social issues. The policy obstacles to implementing such transport plans are analyzed and compared, and the methods used to implement them are discussed, particularly in relation to road safety. The second section presents examples of such environmentally friendly transport planning including examples such as traffic restraint and pedestrian precincts. The book concludes with a review of present achievements and future priorities. For abstracts of some of the papers see C 1223-1241.
