Samenvatting

This joint GLC/TRRL study was designed to satisfy two sets of complementary objectives. Those related to the GLC's need for an assessment of freight policy options and the TRRL requirement for data on a conurbation to supplement their other studies. The paper describes the data collection methods adopted and uses the study results to describe goods vehicle traffic operations in the 14 square mile sector of London chosen for detailed study. Through traffic is differentiated from traffic stopping in the area and particular emphasis is placed on the activities of the larger goods vehicles. The likely reactions of vehicle operators and the receivers of goods to restrictions on their activities were obtained by intensive interview of a sample of firms operating in London. To illustrate the use being made of the study data by the GLC, a description is given of the assessment of various options for the control of the movements of large vehicles in inner London.
