For years now, the traditional location of the pedestrian traffic lights is at the end of the pedestrian crossing. Since 1984, experiments with a new location of the pedestrian traffic lights, namely at the beginning of the pedestrian crossing, have been taking place in several locations in The Netherlands. This new location of the pedestrian traffic lights is also known as `the Maastricht position'. By studying the literature, an inventory has been made of the advantages and the disadvantages of the `Maastricht position'. The effect on safety of these two types of pedestrian traffic light locations is investigated. The differences between these two pedestrian traffic light location are given and the results of the investigations are described and recommendations are made.
