Samenvatting

The use of the Mobile Traffic Services (MTS) traffic information system from LogicaCMG in the province of Noord-Brabant in the Netherlands is described. MTS enabled information about travel speeds and travel times on particular roads to be obtained using the positions of travelling mobile phones in the Dutch Vodafone network. The processing of data taken anonymously from the GSM (global system for mobiles) network into traffic data for thehighway authority is discussed in relation to geographic information on the infrastructure, location of antennas in the mobile network, raw trafficdata provided by GSMs on the road network, databases of traffic data and services for users. A validation study was conducted to test the quality and availability of the information. Data were compared with those obtainedusing magnetic loop detectors, automatic number plate recognition and probe vehicles. Data were obtained for highways, regional roads and urban arterial roads. The applicability of the information and legislative, administrative and technical issues are considered. The costs and benefits of MTSapplications were determined.
