Evaluation of ultrasonic vehicle detector (UVD) was conducted in an intersection in the city of Beijing in cooperation of BRITE (Beijing Research Institute of Traffic Engineering), Tsinghua University and Matsushita Communication Industrial. During the test period, there were exceptional cases of vehicle detection: (1) detection of non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles and tricycles, and (2) detection of vehicles in the opposite direction. Though this fact makes the difference between the actual traffic volume and the volume detected by UVD, detected data can be optimized by non-linear regression analysis for the use of actual traffic data. In addition, the development of an algorithm for UVD to identify smaller vehicles or pedestrians is recommended for wide use of UVD. On the other hand, traffic regulation and lane marking to separate lanes for automobiles in different directions and to separate lanes for automobiles and non-motorized vehicles is required for the effective use and implementation of vehicle detection systems.
