Guilty by Association: A Spatial Analysis of Bus Stop Locations and Pedestrian Accidents.

This paper begins by examining descriptive statistics on bus boarding andalighting volumes at bus stop locations and pedestrian accidents in Honolulu. Each of the bus stops and pedestrian accidents are geocoded to the same coordinate system that matches with Honolulu's city street map. Then a 100 meter buffer zone is created around each bus stop, which is called as focus bus stop, to aggregate the location of pedestrian accidents and other stops. Using Euclidean distances between focus stops and pedestrian accident as well as other stop locations, a measure of the spatial concentration of both accidents and volumes over distance is derived. Rank ordered and Pearsons correlation coefficients as well as other statistical techniques are used to establish the relationships between bus stop locations, pedestrian activity, and accidents. The research also provides some insightinto pedestrian volumes and underlying exposure based on activity near bus stops. Another way of thinking about the geocoded bus volumes is that they provide valuable insight into pedestrian activity and movements. Key locations in which to focus on pedestrian safety are a function of both theactivity generators (represented by bus stop volumes) and the actual number of pedestrian collisions. These measures could be used to identify hazardous zones important to motor vehicle drivers, pedestrians, and bus operations.
