History of the choice of driving on the left or on the right- hand side of the road and on rails in some countries is presented. The custom of driving on the right dates from the French revolution. The increase in motor traffic was for most countries a motive for switching from left to right. Countries still holding to the left are Britain, Ireland, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore
