Samenvatting

The Road design handbook comprises four parts. `Basic criteria' addresses subjects that apply in general to the other three parts, each of which explores the design of one of the three road categories distinguished by the Sustainable safety of traffic concept, i.e. distributor roads, district access roads and estate access roads. As part of the Sustainable safety traffic concept, the road is carefully integrated into the environment, and harmonised and visibly organised according to the use desired by the road authority. Both aspects are central to `Estate access roads'. This type of road is often small-scale and local in nature. As a result, the road is closely intertwined with the environment. Moreover, the design and appearance of many estate access roads can be attributed to the road's history. This demands a strong connection between the specific functions and characteristics of an area with the traffic engineering organisation of the road. Starting point for the design of estate access roads is customisation using a multidisciplinary approach.
