Samenvatting

Written to be as complete a reference as possible, the Handbook of Highway Engineering presents all aspects of highway design, engineering and construction. Since highway planners and designers must now be aware of the impact of highways on adjacent neighbourhoods and potential disruption of communities, Part A, Highway Planning and Development Issues, includes topics related to non-engineering areas of highway development and construction such as financing, privatisation, access management, environmental issues, road safety and noise levels. Part B, The Functional and Structural Design of Highways, discusses the technical aspects of highway geometrics, highway materials, design of flexible, rigid and segmental pavements, overlays and highway drainage systems. Part C, Construction, Maintenance and Management of Highways, emphasizes the need for a total approach to highway development which must include planning for the life cycle needs of the road network such as project management, highway maintenance, asset management, pavement management systems, highway condition surveys, structural evaluation of highway pavements, pavement skid resistance management and bridge management systems. The thoughtful and well planned design, construction and maintenance of a road network, the core of transportation infrastructure, will insure local, state and national access to markets and continued economic growth.
