Samenvatting

Pedestrian safety and accessibility has long been a concern to Federal, State, and local agencies. The result has been a wide diversity of published reports, recommended practices and changes in accessibility standards for the planning, design and maintenance of pedestrian facilities. Much of this information is out of date, too technical or detailed and occasionally too confusing to provide the necessary assistance for traffic engineering professionals and planners to provide adequate pedestrian facilities. This handbook consolidates the current state-of-the-art pertaining to pedestrian facilities. It is designed to provide up-to-date information on pedestrian facilities in one document to serve the needs of planners and engineers in the majority of cases. In those instances where additional in-depth information is required, the handbook serves to identify the relevant publications from which the information can be obtained. (Author/publisher)
