The report presents a pilot study aimed at testing the possibilities of the Swedish Road Safety Office to carry out and make use of in-depth accident investigations. Two different techniques were used: "on the scene" and "on the spot". With the "on the scene" technique, the investigation team arrives at the scene of the accident within 10-20 minutes after the accident, while the "on the spot" technique means that data collection does not begin until some time after the accident. However, the latter technique requires an interview with the road users involved to be carried out at the place where the accident happened. Both techniques have proved useful in studying the pre-crash phase. Primarily the "on the spot" technique is recommended for further use. It is emphasised that the investigations should be directed towards specific problems and that efforts are required to make the results applicable to work on improving road safety.
