The paper raises issues relating to the road transport of hazardous substances in Brazil. The poor condition of many roads in the country play a role in accidents involving chemical hazards, but also there is a lack of knowledge not only among the general public but also transport operators regarding the meanings of symbols displayed on vehicles carrying hazardous loads. The paper outlines some of the research, from the literature, on information flow and processing to produce desired behaviour patterns with respect to handling dangerous products. Consultation took place with visual arts specialists to find ways of making the pictograms clearer. The outcome of this was the suggestion that an educational booklet should be created and an internet search of a number of these was carried out to find a suitable format. Help was obtained from an interview with professionals of design, psychology and education. The object of the booklet is to make it clear to the reader what the hazard symbols look like and what they represent. For the covering abstract see ITRD E137120.
