Samenvatting

This article provides a detailed analysis of road accidents to pedal cyclists in Great Britain during 1990: 256 cyclists were killed, 4,300 seriously injured, and 21,800 slightly injured. About 8% of all road accident casualties but about 23% of road casualties aged 5-15 were cyclists. During recent years, the severity of accidents to cyclists and the proportion of child casualties have both decreased. In addition to its discussion of facts and figures, the article displays graphs and charts presenting different statistics: (1) total casualties among children and adults from 1970 to 1990; (2) 1990 casualty rates for different age groups and sexes; (3) 1990 casualties per day by time of day for weekdays and weekends; (4) 1990 casualties by month among adults and children; (5) 1989 international comparison of cyclist fatality rates; (6) 1990 casualty rates for different parts of Great Britain; (7) 1990 cycle accidents by road type; (8) 1990 proportions of different vehicle types and vehicle manoeuvres among vehicles in collision with cyclists; (9) 1991 proportions of cycle manoeuvres among cyclists involved in accidents; (10) indices of cyclist casualties by age and severity from 1980 to 1990; and (11) data about cycle journeys.
