Samenvatting

This paper was presented at the "Land contamination and site clean-up" session. These proceedings are available on CD-ROM. This paper deals with a well contamination problem at Upper Heffley Creek (British Columbia) caused by placement of salt near the community wells. Following lengthy procedures and various efforts to remedy the problem, the salt was relocated, new wells were drilled and a monitoring program was established (still continues). The Transportation Association of Canada was asked to initiate the `Salt management study' that will provide a positive environmental outcome to the use and storage of salt for winter maintenance throughout Canada. This paper will describe the contamination and remediation efforts of the aquifer at Heffley Creek and review the positive results that the salt management study will have for road transportation organizations in Canada.
