Does a parking guidance system help? Simulation of cars cruising for a carpark. The search for a free parking lot generates a substantial part of trips made toward the city centres. Parking policies aim to reduce the volume of traffic in the city centre. One of the elements of this policy is to reduce the amount of cars searching for parking. Relatively little attention is given to parking in most traffic models. Most interest comes from the economists who are looking at the relation between parking fees and the allocation of cars. In this article we review some of the possibilities for modelling cars cruising for parking within a microsimulation model. We focus on the effects of a parking guidance system and describe two cases that have been actually modelled with Paramics.
